Getting around with Routes

Every day, we rely on transportation to live our life. Whether it is taking our own car to work, driving to see a friend or family member, jumping in a cab to get to an appointment, or walking to grab milk we forgot to buy. Transportation is essential. It is so natural to some of us, that we never stop to think that getting around with ease is a luxury not everyone has access to.
Routes Connecting Communities is a York Region community based not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping people facing life challenges get to where they need to be. There are people in our communities that face social, physical, mental, or financial barriers preventing them from having access to timely, safe, and compassionate transportation.
While taking transit might be easy for one person, it’s an insurmountable task for others. The cost of a taxi might be affordable one time, but when you rely on it daily or even weekly, it adds up. And, not everyone is able to drive or can afford to own a vehicle. These people rely on Routes to create a resilient future during tough times.
Take Michael, for example. Michael is a client of Routes who is unable to drive due to his medical condition. He must travel from southern York Region to Keswick every day in order to receive pain medication at the Ontario Addiction Treatment Centre for his back condition.
And then there is Anne, a senior who lost her husband and relies on Routes’ services for subsidized rides to get her into town to the Georgina Community Food Pantry once a month. There’s Steven, a young and single dad who relies on Routes’ drivers to take him and his son to a children’s program once a week. Or there’s Spencer, a senior with a mental health condition that makes driving and taking public transit difficult. He enjoys going out and meeting new people, and Routes’ drivers take Spencer to the Community Dinner at the Keswick United Church every Thursday, out of his home and into the community.
Everyone deserves access to their community. Whether it’s getting to medical appointments, social engagements, or simply running errands – everyone deserves the ability to go. Routes has a team of 30 volunteer drivers who provide transportation using their personal vehicles to help their clients gain access to the services they need. In addition to the volunteer transportation program, Routes offers bus trips to special destinations, such as shopping centres, local special events and attractions because social inclusion is just as important as necessities.
Routes is always looking for dedicated and compassionate volunteers. Contact Routes today at info@routescc.org or (905) 722-4616 for more information about how you can provide support.
