Steps to Become a Volunteer


All our volunteers are making a huge difference  to the lives of our clients. Volunteering with Routes Connecting Communities is rewarding, and a great way to spend your free time if you have some to spare. 

The steps to become a volunteer are as follows:

Volunteer Driver

  1. Fill out the Application Form (if you do not have access to the internet, please give us a call at (905) 722-4616)
  2. Have an interview with one of the staff members
  3. Submit two references
  4. Apply for a Vulnerable Sector Check (note: costs will be reimbursed after 16 hours of driving)
  5. Order a 3-year uncertified driver's abstract ((note: costs will be reimbursed after 16 hours of driving)
  6. Do on-line training
    - watch Routes' driver training video (12:04min)
    - watch the York Region Accessible Customer Service training video (30:44min)
    - watch Brené's Brown video on Empathy (2:53min)
    - review MTO's child seat protocols 
  7. Read the volunteer handbook
  8. read the Routes' COVID Transportation Protocol 
  9. Prepare copies of your:
    - G driver’s license
    - proof of vehicle ownership
    - insurance showing valid dates and their coverage
    - bank information (either a void cheque or direct deposit form)
    - receipts from the VSC and the driver’s abstract
  10. Meet with one of the staff members who will:
    - do a vehicle inspection
    - give you the supplies and PPEs
    - go over the training material
    - take a photo for your badge 
  11. Sign the following forms:
    - Confidentially form
    - Routes' training statement of understanding

Delivery Volunteer

  1. Fill out the Application Form (if you do not have access to the internet, please give us a call at (905) 722-4616)
  2. Read the Routes' COVID Transportation Protocol 
  3. Send a copy of your G2 or G driver’s license to the office
  4. Sign the following forms:
    - Confidently form 
    - Routes' COVID Transportation Protocol 

Friendly Call Volunteer

  1. Fill out the Application Form (if you do not have access to the internet, please give us a call at (905) 722-4616)
  2. Have a phone call with one of the staff members
  3. Apply for a Vulnerable Sector Check (note: costs will be reimbursed after 16 hours of volunteering)
  4. Read the training manual
  5. Sign the following forms:
    - Confidentially form
    - Routes' training statement of understanding

Board Member

  1. Submit your cover letter and resume to board@routescc.org
  2. Have an interview with the Board Co-Chairs and Executive Director
