Volunteer Opportunities


We are extremely grateful and proud of the work of our volunteers. Routes would not be what it is today without the ongoing support of our volunteers. 

We have the following opportunities available:

Volunteer Driver

As a volunteer driver, you will help people get to and from appointments, social engagements, and reach essential services in the community. You will be there at a time of need, providing company and reliable transport to those in your community. 

Requirements:
  • Current, valid “G” driver’s license
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check, a 3-year uncertified driver’s record and two references
  • $1M liability insurance (preferably $2M)
  • Registered, insured and inspected vehicle
  • Signed confidentiality form

Delivery Volunteer

As a delivery driver, you will bring food pantry hampers, community take-out meals and groceries to residents.

Requirements:
  • Current, valid “G”or "G2" driver’s license
  • Signed confidentially form

Friendly Call Volunteer

As a Friendly Call volunteer you engage in friendly conversations over the phone with people who may be feeling lonely, isolated or would simply like to someone to talk to. We are looking for friendly, caring volunteers to provide support and friendship. Volunteers do NOT give advice nor counselling. Any crisis situations will be immediately deferred to appropriate authorities, emergency or crisis services. 

Requirements:
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check and two references
  • Signed confidentially form

Board Member

We are looking for individuals who feel passionate about providing people who are dealing with life challenges a way to get around through timely, safe, affordable and compassionate transportation.

Directors act in a position of trust for the community and are responsible for the effective governance and leadership of our organization. Directors are fully informed on organization matters and participates in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, fundraising and advocacy. Directors’ skills and experience enhance the resources for Routes and as such, Directors are available to the Executive Director for advice and counsel.

Monthly Board meetings are scheduled late afternoon/ early evening in a location in Central York Region. In addition to this, Directors are expected to participate in at least one committee and to volunteer for fundraising or outreach events. Time commitment is around 4 – 8 hours per month. Directors serve for a two-year term with a maximum of three consecutive terms.
